Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipOriginally I had this instinct to approach the film in a more investigative way.
Looking at, you know, sexual assault in the trucking industry, the issue with wages, and very quickly, once I met Desiree and spent time with her, Michelle, Idella, and the other drivers, it became about them.
They had managed to create this community and this world apart from men, and with so much humor and love and generosity.
Even though they were separated by miles of highway, I was really struck by how they supported one another.
We wanted to spend time not only following, you know, things that were happening that were dramatic in their lives, but just to spend time in the truck and try to understand the experience of what it's like to be on the road.
I want people to come away with at least an awareness of the human cost of that work and that labor, what it takes to deliver these products to people.
It would be wonderful if people came away with this sense of worker solidarity, and an understanding that all of these struggles are interconnected and we're all looking for the same things— safety, self-determination, the right to life.
And hopefully when you're on the highway after watching this film, you might look up, take a look and see who's behind the wheel and recognize that there are actual human beings doing this work.
